Memory Reconsolidation and EFT

Yesterday, I posted on Facebook an episode from the "Truth about Cancer" video series that discussed how 70% of "Energy Medicine" is understood in Western medicine terms. Much of it is just plain science!

Here is a small piece of that science:  Memory reconsolidation and memory extinction are part of what goes on subconsciously during tapping and Matrix Reimprinting. Science appears to show we have 10 minutes to 5 hours to change an old memory before our psyche puts it back into our subconscious memory box (hippocampus) as either a more positive or more negative memory.

It appears that as we "talk" about our negative hurtful emotional memories, we more deeply encode them (like learning a new skill - the more practice we get the better we are at doing the new skill), even though the details within the memory may change a bit each time we "tell" that same story. Tapping while reiterating the story seems to do the opposite - it allows the emotional pull contained within the memory to release.

I've repeated this dozens of times:  Dr. Eric Kandel won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research that explains we double our neural pathways to a memory for every hour we think about that memory! Every time we recall something emotionally tragic in our life, we exponentially build the brain's nerve cells (neurons) to reinforce the memory AND the perception it produced in our subconscious mind (building a skill!) .  That negativity breeds powerfully more negativity! We are trapped in our own thoughts and beliefs about ourselves, and about others, including our God. Tapping appears to halt this neural growth process nicely! But we often must tap regularly and efficiently.

"Memory extinction" is when an old negative memory no longer has any hurtful pull contained within it when the memory is recalled.

I bring this up now because some of you may see on internet videos that some practitioners have eliminated the Set-up. I did for awhile, but I am now back to using it consistently.

We believe that using the Set-up (Even though this is happening, add in the acceptance or safety statement), begins the memory reconsolidation process, along with shifting toward a positive reframe. A reframe is when we shift our perspective about some memory, even though the memory and facts contained with it stay the same. Reframes are personal and come organically within a tapping session as our painful emotional angst around an event begins to lift and forgiveness starts to settle in. Sometimes, as Cathy Reiling says, forgiveness begins with us just "allowing" an event to exist in our memory. We know it happened, but we can do nothing to change it, so as we tap we just "let it be". We stop fighting the memory (what we resist, persists - Carl Jung, I think); we let it exist without having any emotional attachment to it.

It is a bit like "co-existing" with a crabby neighbor or in-law. We cannot control their behavior, but by tapping we can change our perspective, allowing the bad feelings their behaviors produces in us just slide off us, like eggs in a teflon skillet!

Our hurtful memories release with tapping, permitting our emotional perspectives around the memory/event to change with it. Often with the emotional release, our behaviors and habits wrapped up in the painful perspectives change with it. Subconsciously we give ourselves permission to act and believe differently - and that different most often has a positive, helpful bend to it!

"Memory reconsolidation is the brain’s natural, neural process that can produce transformational change: the full, permanent elimination of an acquired behavior or emotional response. It is the brain’s innate process for fundamentally revising an existing learning and the acquired behavioral responses and/or state of mind maintained by that learning. (Ecker, 2015)."

Here is a more indepth article.

EFT & Memory Reconsolidation

In the article referenced at the bottom of this blog, I copied this statement:  "What most probably happens is that memories in long term storage stay fairly stable until they are remembered. The process of remembering alters stored memories in some still unknown but physical fashion so that they become temporarily unstable and need to be consolidated (made stable) once again." {in a more positive fashion when using EFT - my comment}

So, exactly what does that mean in laymen’s language?

When something horrible happens to us, and remember “horrible” is in the eye of the beholder, what is awful to one person means little to another, trauma is personal, we remember. Sometimes the memory stays in the conscious mind, but other times it is only remember subconsciously.

Once that memory is accessed or brought back into the conscious mind, it is friable, or able to be changed. Every time we re-tell a memory we change details in it.

Using EFT, or tapping, we have the ability to change an awful, traumatic into something neutral, and no longer threatening – a memory that holds no triggering charge for us, and no longer runs our life. This is called memory “reconsolidation”. The memory is changed for the better. We remember what happened in the event, but the event is no longer important to our life story, or who we think we are.

Dr Robert Scaer’s definition of a traumatic event is it is horrifically overwhelming and one thinks one is going to die because the situation is completely hopeless and the person feels completely helpless and without resources.  This is why we need to ask clients, "What were you THINKING" when that memory happened. Often the thought of death itself is so buried in the psyche it underpins the memory. Tapping on, "I was going to die" multiple times until it neutralizes, along with tapping the emotion of "shock" that the event even happened takes much of the punch & sting out of the memory, in many cases.

I don’t recommend at all that individuals tap on their own traumatic memories. This is one of those times when it is imperative that you hire an EFT practitioner to help you. Why? Because most likely you will NOT go deep enough to neutralize all the aspects of what happened at that fateful time, and in only partially “fixing” the memory you might drive it deeper into the subconscious. (Please just get help – email me! I have a list of Christian practitioners to help you).

Often huge amounts of the neurotransmitter norephinephrine are secreted during a trauma.  Norephinephrine drives the sensory memory. The more norephinephrine pumped out, the better the memory aspects stick.

"Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is, of course, an anxiety disorder that occurs sometimes in the aftermath of exposure to a horrendous traumatic experience involving death or the threat of death. It essentially involves a person ingesting a trauma memory that is so "hot" and emotionally overwhelming that it cannot be processed and grieved normally and instead is just avoided as best as can be managed. The trauma memory does not degrade as normal memories do, but instead stays fresh and intrudes into the traumatized person's awareness in an unwanted, unbidden and very frightening manner. Three classes of classic PTSD symptoms come out of this situation: 1) hypervigilance for threats, 2) attempts to avoid threats (anything which will trigger the trauma memories), and 3) chronic intrusive remembering of the trauma memory despite attempts to avoid it."

The above definition of PTSD comes from this same article.

I want to stress to you that PTSD symptoms almost never go away spontaneously and the triggers and behaviors resulting from the trauma are NOT your fault! Often trauma leads to PTSD. Memories continue to disintegrate and magnify as years pass. And there is absolutely no way a person with PTSD symptoms can work on themselves using EFT or any other energy techniques and adequately clear the trauma. It is a must that they find a practitioner who can gently lead them where they must go to resolves all the deep-seated trauma pieces of the memory.

Because these memories are so imbedded in the hippocampus, they continue to intrude into the life of the one who carries the memories. Sadly, the damage goes even further in that the hippocampus actually shrinks, taking with the shrinking the good earlier memories when life was good and pleasant, leaving the person with just a life full of bad memories.

Triggers, those short snaps of sensory input, that causes the flare-up of emotions and spontaneously erratic behaviors is nothing one can control. The amygdala in the brain is now in control once these memories are implanted deeply in the psyche.

EFT is one of the few modalities that actually effectively works on neutralizing and calming these awful memories.

Post-traumatic memories are not a weakness in personality or spirit. They are something done to you as a result of something awful that happened years or decades ago. There is nothing shameful about asking for help.

So, do you have memories that haunt you?  God has offered us an opportunity through tapping to once and for all reconsolidate those memories and put them to bed forever.

Trauma and Using Exact Words in EFT

From this week's EFTUniverse Newsletter, "Dr. Robert Scaer, a researcher and specialist in treating trauma, maintains that any type of negative life event that occurs when the person is in a state of relative helplessness can produce the same changes in the brain as those that occur in combat, rape, or abuse. He believes that what makes a life event become trauma isn't the nature of the threat but the degree of helplessness the victim fears plus that person's history of other trauma."

How many of these have all of you seen? A memory/event/emotion that should seem to be relatively insignificant ends up being that big T trauma that tailspins a client's life.

This is why what trauma to one person may not be trauma to another. Much of the meaning of the trauma is determined by what the client has experienced previously in life (how much other trauma) and the perceptions built around those earlier experiences.

Because of all of this, we consistently use the client's words and phrases because those particular words have a special meaning to the client. Those words could hold the perception of the event details, including all the sensory input.

Example:  Recently another student friend of mine tapped with a man around a ton of childhood trauma. She phoned me after tapping to "review" what she had done and to ask if I had any other suggestions for next session.

This client became very agitated when he told her the name his classmates called him in high school. His SUDS on several emotions were near 10. She asked permission and then started slowly having him just say that name over and over again, telling me, "I think we said it 50 times."  Guess what, with each repetition the emotional pull around that name lessened and lessened. My friend could literally hear and feel the power diminishing.

When the client left my friend's office, one more time on the street, she said the name to him again (testing), and the client looked at her saying, "Oh, that is so silly now. What does it matter?"

Success! EFT did its magic, the emotion was neutralized around those specific words, lessening the charge and the changing the perception around the events (memory reconsolidation).

How many years have I been doing this?  I still stand amazed at all the stories.

How Perceptions Work in EFT

My friend and colleague Wendy Williams wrote this fictional story to illustrate how perceptions impact our memory, and how we use them in EFT vs. "Therapy". Printed here with permission.

Enjoy!
"I too can speak to the differences. By therapy, you are reviewing the event/hurt as you experienced it or recalled it. For the sake of this conversation, let's say my sister beat me up (broke my nose and my spirit) when I was 9 and she was 11. I have never felt close to her since and before that, we were tight. I felt victimized and felt it put a dent in all the family events/ gatherings moving forward. It was a real loss and now, as an adult, I still feel the sting and wish it hadn't happened and still view her as a bully. My stomach gets in knots and my defenses are up whenever I am around her. I feel that my sense of family was damaged/ruined from age 9 on and she is to blame.
This is my "story"... this is how I recall it and it's lasting impact is as I describe and I am sticking to it.
Therapy: Review the event and ask me to review how I felt then and how I feel now and review how to live now... ignore her? Pray for our relationship? Stay away from painful family events? Confront her? Exact apology? Take antidepressants? Take anti anxiety agents? Side with me on "of course you are hurt/damaged.... you were beaten up!"
My sister: Her "story" is bound to be different.... I provoked her? I took her favorite doll/toy/snack ONE TOO MANY TIMES! and she had to lash out! She pushed me hard and I fell against the coffee table and that was what broke my nose. She NEVER touched my face/nose with her fist. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT! And, she has felt terrible and regretful ever since, but I never accepted her apology, no matter how many times she offered it when she was 11, 12 etc. She finally gave up after a couple of years and assumed the "black sheep" role I assigned her. She never sought that role, but, there it is.

My Mom: Those two girls were each other's best friend... I HATE that they came to such an end. I was horrified to see little wendy with that bloody nose... so bent! So many tears... so much blood. I never expected the older one to do that! Punch Wendy? Really?? But, the evidence was there.... a broken nose. I tried and tried to get them to resume their sweet relationship, but after my husband left around that time, I got distracted. In my mind, both of them are good girls and I wish things had turned out differently, but I guess the older one turned ugly with her father leaving us. Ah me...
WHICH OF THESE IS "TRUE"? WHICH IS THE STORY AS IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED? Unknowable... Yet, each person here is telling their TRUTH, right?
EFT: The story is IRRELEVANT because all of our memories and experiences come through our very subjective filter... there is now way to "know" what really happened unless you filmed it and even then, the ways of the hearts involved?? No one knows.

SO, EFT goes for the neurological charge that is associated with how Wendy recalls it... through stating and tapping how I recall it and sense it. By doing this, the "charge" is re-routed and turned down. The cortisol charge around it is recalibrated and reduced such that further recollection leaves me with hardly any "charge" anymore. It doesn't "hurt" the way it did. I still can recall the event as I experienced it... the memory is not gone... it just doesn't flare up.
This can take a very short amount of time.... I cannot say "how long" but, since it is not about review and recall and rehearse, rather it is about repair of the charge."

The memory shift happens quickly with EFT. Once the charge Wendy discusses above is gone, the memory becomes, for all intents and purposes, irrelevant. Wendy usually forgives her sister because the accident "just happened" and relationships often get repaired and rebuilt. This is called memory reconsolidation. God is so good!

Consider trying EFT for yourself!  You will be pleasantly surprised!

To God be all the glory!  Amen.

PTSD Article

The 6 hour window here is probably why when doing Matrix Reimprinting (MR) we instruct the client to "imprint" the new memory at least once more in the subsequent 5 hours after the session. Two, three or four times would be even better to change those neurons into that new picture.
Memory reconsolidation happens everytime we repeat a trauma story. The story simply changes with each re-telling. We mix stories together. We mess up the details. None of this matters in EFT and MR. Perception is ALL that counts - what did the memory, true or false, mean to the client? That is what we eventually change with tapping - perception.
This is why I instruct parents to tap with kids before bed. Come up with a bedtime routine, be it prayers or reading, that includes a few minutes of tapping.
Allow each child to briefly speak about their day while their siblings tap with them. Everyone gets "borrowed benefits" from the others, and anything that might have bothered the child gets "consolidated" with negative emotional perceptions removed before the hippocampus has time to embed them in the body.......so we practitioners can 20-30 years later make alot of money removing those negative memories!!!
