Personal and Family Epigenetics Running Our Present Lives

Here is an interesting article that explains the new field of epigenetics.

What often is running both our emotional and physical health is our own personal past. There truly is still more affecting us than we ever envisioned decades ago!
As mind and brain research continues to unfold, scientists are only just beginning to understand that experiences and memories of our forefathers and foremothers are also running our personal biology.
I'm not talking about "past lives" or "reincarnation", so please don't confuse epigenetics with that topic!
God wrapped up so very much in the human body when He created us. Part of that experiential learning is bound up in the new science field of epigenetics. In order to survive life, all species, including humans, have to learn and REMEMBER what they experienced so as not to repeat that possibly dangerous behavior.
Often these behaviors were repeated so often and are so hardwired into our subconscious memory! God created this as a good thing! However, with sin entering the world, it can often go awry.
When we remember not only the incident but all the accompanying emotional pain and fallout from something horrific, this piece of the learning also gets stuffed into our body's cells. The cells remember the pain which can then get triggered when we sense a danger that is closely akin to what happened in the past.
So, we not only remember the incident as a safety valve to protect us, we remember the emotional pain to reinforce that learning.
Often this is subconscious! We don't know we have inherited great, great grandma's issues, but we have and we can.

We have lots to tap about! Tapping can make a huge dent in this ancestor stuff. And when we clear it using EFT and/or Matrix Reimprinting (or other somatic techniques), often our physical issues also heal once the body's cells release the pain they have been holding.
God is amazing! He thought of it all! We truly are blessed!

EFT Tapping & Matrix Reimprinting

We occasionally discuss Matrix Reimprinting (MR) on this board because to become a MR practitioner one must have taken a LIVE EFT Level 1 & 2 classes. Tapping is done throughout most of the MR technique.

“Changing the memory” is often how MR is described & even I’ve been guilty of using that description.

Nice article explaining that we are changing the memory PERCEPTION not the memory itself. MR is a darn good way to change up core beliefs but, to be the most effective, should only be done AFTER all the emotions are tapped out of the negative memory or event. Otherwise all it appears we are doing is applying new wallpaper over old peeling wallpaper. In this analogy, removing peeling wallpaper first is equivalent to neutralizing the memory’s emotional content.

In tapping we are working with perceptions. How do we feel TODAY about that memory or event that happened back then? What life beliefs did we form because of that event(s)?

We tap out the emotional content of those ugly memories and then apply MR by “resourcing” our younger selves helping them through their take-away perceptions, often changing the lens through which life is NOW seen.

EFT is not a substitute for sound medical or psychological advice, so please contact your own physician if you have need of these kind of services.

Memories, EFT Tapping, and Matrix Reimprinting - How It All Changes our Emotional Beliefs

Matrix Reimprinting (MR) has been in play for almost a decade now after Karl Dawson "fell" upon the technique years ago. Because the science behind it is a bit confusing we often say MR changes memories. That is not a correct description.

EFT and changing memories fallacy article explains what is going on behind our mind's screen when using tapping and MR.

MR is another technique I use with clients along with EFT.

There are classes available but taking a LIVE Levels 1 & 2 EFT class is a pre-requisite.

Memory Reconsolidation and EFT

Yesterday, I posted on Facebook an episode from the "Truth about Cancer" video series that discussed how 70% of "Energy Medicine" is understood in Western medicine terms. Much of it is just plain science!

Here is a small piece of that science:  Memory reconsolidation and memory extinction are part of what goes on subconsciously during tapping and Matrix Reimprinting. Science appears to show we have 10 minutes to 5 hours to change an old memory before our psyche puts it back into our subconscious memory box (hippocampus) as either a more positive or more negative memory.

It appears that as we "talk" about our negative hurtful emotional memories, we more deeply encode them (like learning a new skill - the more practice we get the better we are at doing the new skill), even though the details within the memory may change a bit each time we "tell" that same story. Tapping while reiterating the story seems to do the opposite - it allows the emotional pull contained within the memory to release.

I've repeated this dozens of times:  Dr. Eric Kandel won the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research that explains we double our neural pathways to a memory for every hour we think about that memory! Every time we recall something emotionally tragic in our life, we exponentially build the brain's nerve cells (neurons) to reinforce the memory AND the perception it produced in our subconscious mind (building a skill!) .  That negativity breeds powerfully more negativity! We are trapped in our own thoughts and beliefs about ourselves, and about others, including our God. Tapping appears to halt this neural growth process nicely! But we often must tap regularly and efficiently.

"Memory extinction" is when an old negative memory no longer has any hurtful pull contained within it when the memory is recalled.

I bring this up now because some of you may see on internet videos that some practitioners have eliminated the Set-up. I did for awhile, but I am now back to using it consistently.

We believe that using the Set-up (Even though this is happening, add in the acceptance or safety statement), begins the memory reconsolidation process, along with shifting toward a positive reframe. A reframe is when we shift our perspective about some memory, even though the memory and facts contained with it stay the same. Reframes are personal and come organically within a tapping session as our painful emotional angst around an event begins to lift and forgiveness starts to settle in. Sometimes, as Cathy Reiling says, forgiveness begins with us just "allowing" an event to exist in our memory. We know it happened, but we can do nothing to change it, so as we tap we just "let it be". We stop fighting the memory (what we resist, persists - Carl Jung, I think); we let it exist without having any emotional attachment to it.

It is a bit like "co-existing" with a crabby neighbor or in-law. We cannot control their behavior, but by tapping we can change our perspective, allowing the bad feelings their behaviors produces in us just slide off us, like eggs in a teflon skillet!

Our hurtful memories release with tapping, permitting our emotional perspectives around the memory/event to change with it. Often with the emotional release, our behaviors and habits wrapped up in the painful perspectives change with it. Subconsciously we give ourselves permission to act and believe differently - and that different most often has a positive, helpful bend to it!

"Memory reconsolidation is the brain’s natural, neural process that can produce transformational change: the full, permanent elimination of an acquired behavior or emotional response. It is the brain’s innate process for fundamentally revising an existing learning and the acquired behavioral responses and/or state of mind maintained by that learning. (Ecker, 2015)."

Epigenetics and Tapping

Epigenetics - have you ever heard the term? I wrote a a chapter on "Generational Curses" in the EFT for Christians book, Tapping into God's Peace & Joy, but it appears there is so much more going on here around "generational trauma". Exodus 34:6-7 is one set of the "sins of the father's" verses, among others. These incidents may not be "sins" per say, but trauma experienced decades or centuries ago by a family member.

Don't confuse these ideas with "past lives" as that is not what this is or what I am talking about here. There are studies, few done on humans because we live way longer than mice and nematodes (!) that show the memories live in the body anywhere from 3 to 14 generations after an ancestor experiences an untoward event IF the trauma hasn't been processed. Most of these studies looked at how traumas are transferred via male sperm because sperm are easier to study than female ovum. These types of traumas can be processed with EFT tapping and Matrix Reimprinting, the other EFT technique many of us use.
Bottom line here is some of our personal emotional issues simply may not even be our own, but DNA/RNA markers carried on our genes, as an unpleasant gift from one of forefathers or foremothers. The DNA doesn't change, but it does get a "marker" attached to it.
And using EFT tapping to thoroughly process the negative events/memories/feeling you experience could well save countless future generations the PAIN YOU ARE FEELING TODAY.

Give your kids a gift - tap and let the old stuff go!!

Memory Reconsolidation and EFT

I like this article. It is pretty succinctly states how memory reconsolidation actually works in clinical settings.

This man states what no one else will really say - that we "erase neural circuits".  We all know it is happening, but in EFT circles we are cautioned not to actually say that. I just say it! We are changing our neurology with tapping.

The steps of how to accomplish the memory reconsolidation are all packed into how EFT is done with the set-up and the tapping.

We ask the client what memory or habit they want changed. We help them retrieve a memory, or God does, that matches how they feel about the memory or habit. And then tapping disconnects the circuits holding the feelings around the memory/habit/event in place, permanently altering it all.

That 5-6 hour window occurs where the memory is friable. In Matrix Reimprinting we tell clients to go through the process of "re-imprinting" the changed scene at least once in the ensuing couple of hours.

This may be where doing a floor to ceiling eye roll or the 9 gamut is truly useful in hardening those positive changes made during the session, integrating the new message into all parts of the brain anatomy, truly rewiring those circuits.

The author claims we must make the session "truly experiential". EFT does that, as we re-ignite by allowing the triggers to come to the surface around the negative memory or event that haunts us, tapping all the while.  God uses tapping to break down that incessant hardened memory while we set up 2 different thoughts in our mind.

"We accept" ourselves in spite of what is going on - this bad memory. The exposure to the problem and just allowing us to be ok with it, or stating we are ok even if we aren't, or hope we can be someday.

As the amygdala finally gets the message that we are now safe in this moment of time and that the trauma is now truly over, the hippocampus can put the memory to bed as a past event.

The author is correct in that it all works in spite of much input from the "therapist". The coach is the guide to the process, not really much involved other than directing the client to go where one needs to go to change the memory, neutralizing it.

Remember, EFT is NOT a substitute for medical care. Please call your own personal physician in case of a medical emergency.

PTSD Article

The 6 hour window here is probably why when doing Matrix Reimprinting (MR) we instruct the client to "imprint" the new memory at least once more in the subsequent 5 hours after the session. Two, three or four times would be even better to change those neurons into that new picture.
Memory reconsolidation happens everytime we repeat a trauma story. The story simply changes with each re-telling. We mix stories together. We mess up the details. None of this matters in EFT and MR. Perception is ALL that counts - what did the memory, true or false, mean to the client? That is what we eventually change with tapping - perception.
This is why I instruct parents to tap with kids before bed. Come up with a bedtime routine, be it prayers or reading, that includes a few minutes of tapping.
Allow each child to briefly speak about their day while their siblings tap with them. Everyone gets "borrowed benefits" from the others, and anything that might have bothered the child gets "consolidated" with negative emotional perceptions removed before the hippocampus has time to embed them in the body.......so we practitioners can 20-30 years later make alot of money removing those negative memories!!!

What is the truth of generational curses?

http://www.ukapologetics.net/08/generationalcurses.htm

Scripture does teach that the sins of the fathers are heaped to the 3rd or 4th generations. They are "curses" of sorts if those generations cannot disband or dismantle the "curse". Why does illegitimacy abound in some families? Divorce? Homosexuality? Drug abuse?

I would like to purpose another thought here: What happens if these generational curses actually exist, as I have thought they do, within the biology, like the article posted above? Epigenetics teaches it isn't a true "heredity", but a familial or enviromental heredity, meaning the behavior or traits learned from the family elders + the "traits" or habits of the family elders of how to handle their emotional issues again handed down through the generations.

Why do we eventually become our mothers and fathers? We don't want to do that, but that is the way we have learned to handle our emotional and psychological issues. Can we change? Absolutely! Part of that change comes through a new life in Jesus Christ. He calls us to have a renewed mind.

Why then do born again Christians still carry around all this crap and junk? My personal opinion is it is repercussions of the family sin. When we confess our sin to God, does He automatically remove the consequences of our sin? Nope! We screw up, we must face the consequences. Isn't that what we teach our kids? And that is why we try to protect our kids from behaviors that can have life long consequences.

Many times God intervenes supernaturally, removing the consequences for His divine purposes. Most times He uses natural means to heal us, or give us coping mechanisms to deal with whatever we now reap from our sinful nature. This is a complicated subject, but one we Christians within the Energy Psychology arena need to explore and deal with because God has handed us, and again I know EFT and Matrix Reimprinting, a tool or mechanism with which to deal with these generational sin issues. And most of our emotions and bad habits are just that, if we are honest and look sincerely at them.

Few churches discuss "sin" anymore. We make mistakes. No, we sin! My Christian EFT technique is based on confession and repentance of sinful emotions. Someone within a family needs to step up, taking responsibility for the family "sin" and stop handing it down through subsequent generations.
