Early Childhood Trauma Tapped

DR. AIMIE APIGIAN “For the first 6-7 months of life, a baby still believes it is physically connected to their mother. This is why by themselves, they become dysregulated. Separation from a biological mother for any length of time in the first 2-3 years of life is traumatic. The earlier the separation, the earlier the trauma impacts and imprints feeling unsafe and insecure into the developing nervous system. The social standard of moms to receive 6 weeks of maternity leave is a very common reason for unknown attachment trauma. This will result in the features of the earliest shock to an infant’s system, the Connection- Attachment NARM style, which happens with an infant experiencing inadequate regulation during its first 0-6 months and having to adapt with the dorsal vagal freeze response. Persistent Emotional Pain

“….persistent symptoms, in fact, can start innocently enough but go on relentlessly-a cold that leads to a lingering cough, a stomach bug that leaves you with a long-term aversion to the food you ate just before getting sick; or a sports injury in which the pain continues after it’s allegedly healed, and there’s no pathology to support it. But once the initial cause of the symptoms passes, there is a new spark that fuels them. And for many people, the spark is a rising level of what I am going to label as ‘discomfort’ - a discomfort that creates a NEW NETWORK {my emphasis} in the brain and body that continually feeds the symptoms. Amazingly, this level of discomfort flies below their mental radar until a symptom crescendos and takes root.” Page 7. “Your Survival Instinct is Killing You” by Marc Schoen, Ph. D. Note: we create an emotional trigger that turns physical and the brain creates an entire new “story” around that issue or symptom, just like a group of old men embellishing fish stories around the dinner table! Once that “tale” is in place, the nerve pathways in the brain dig it in deeper and permanently. Good luck changing that because most likely you consciously don’t even notice……and now you’re stuck! Enter EFT. God’s brain changing technique. What issue/thing/event in your life bugs you? A lot? What happened 6-12 months prior to this ”new” thing popping up in life? That prior event that just came to mind would be the “thing” I’d start tapping on and chatting with Holy Spirit about! There’s your beginning point! Dopamine, Our Pleasure Neurotransmitter! Friend or Foe?

Did you know that when we experience pleasure of one kind or another, our brain chemicals impact our limbic system including the hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, & nucleus accumbens, in particular, and ventral striatum, which are connected to the neurotransmitter dopamine and the brain’s natural opiate, endorphin. Once the body associates a pleasure with those chemicals, it wants more! And more. And more. Let’s use chocolate as an example. Often the mere thought or seeing chocolate produces a release of dopamine in the brain. Then when we taste it, opiates (endorphins) are released further binding our behavior to chocolate eating! Once we eat the chocolate our dopamine level begins to drop. The ANTICIPATION of the pleasure drives the dopamine more so than the actual consumption! Now we have entered dopamine lack which often leaves us feeling deprived and we reach for more chocolate to drive the dopamine back up. It’s cyclic and chocolate is simply an example, as anything pleasurable can send our dopamine levels into overdrive, including other foods, alcohol, sex, shop lifting, work, exercise, dare devil activities, drugs, etc. A similar experience happens with cortisol and sugar. This can be the beginning of an addiction or a craving around a substance or activity that drives anxiousness. Anxiousness is very uncomfortable, but tapping can help. How? By often finding the source event or memories driving the pleasure and tapping on those. Many ask why would I want to rid myself of pleasure! You wouldn’t but perhaps letting go of the excess behaviors might feel like a good idea. And it is, as it often then leaves us more satisfied with less of something (like calories, alcohol, etc.). EFT Christian Spiritual Healing Collides with the Physiological

A wonderful thoughtful Christian tapper Rev. Ronda Stone wrote me, "I think about EFT and how the Lord has given this wonderful tool to us to help cope with all the trauma in one’s life, the lack of feeling loved, and the everyday stresses that accumulate and cause the body/mind to pay the toll in sickness, disease, emotional, and physical pain.

Even though we love the Lord, we are only human and made of clay when facing trials and
difficulties.  It is hard for us to put aside the difficulties and emotions without being concerned or worrying about the outcome of a diagnosis or accident.

The Lord is there for us all along, but in our human make up and propensity to worry and fret, we block Him from being the help to us that He wants to be because of the connection we already have  to fear, sadness, anxiety etc. from past events."

Ronda's insight is right on and I replied to her this way, "And what you wrote is part of the spiritual explanation of EFT and the reason why we, as Christians, should APPLY tapping to all pieces and parts of our life. To lower the cortisol and adrenaline levels that God created in us that helped us escape REAL physical danger years ago (flight, fight), we need to tap today about what happened back then to undo the stress it continues to cause today for our subconscious mind. God created our hormones to react to REAL danger where we would be harmed or eaten (predators, warfare, assault, abuse)! The elevated levels of chemicals was the way God created us to "remember" life's lessons so we don't repeat our harmful mistakes. The chemicals help us to remember the danger lessons, they encode the learned memory. Think of a child touching a hot stove. He might do it once or perhaps twice, but never again!  This is the same mechanism we all use, but with trauma it happens on a much grander survival scale.

Today our "danger" is rarely a true physical danger, but living with negative memories from past events literally resides in our body's cells is our present day stress level.  When we were "attacked" and we ran or fought back, we "blew" off the cortisol and adrenaline. Running or fighting back clears the cortisol and adrenaline from our nervous system. Shaking after an accident appears to do the same thing. We "discharge" the trauma, so to speak.

When we "freeze", neither running or fighting back, the incidents become trauma. Most of us "freeze". We are taught not to fight back or lip off. We then hold the horrific event in our nervous system where it stagnates, stews, and skews our Godly perspective of love and safety. Our thoughts of self-doubt, rage, resentment, and hatred arise in place of love and safety God wants us to feel. These feelings foment for decades; they rarely repair themselves without some kind of emotional support. Because those emotions are so painful to live with we shift our behavior toward self-destroying activities, such as addictions (eating, porn, gambling, sex, shopping, workaholism, etc.) to distract ourselves from what we feel. Tapping "reboots" the body systems!

Humans dislike emotional pain. It's uncomfortable so we stuff it down or drown it out (addictive behaviors). Neither strategy allows the damage or pain to let go. It most often tends to compound it. Talking about it often sends the pain ever deeper into our bodies. It's the tapping, a somatic technique, that often releases it. The emotional pain went into the body's cells as a feeling; it needs to come out of our body the exact same way.
Tapping is the language both your subconscious mind and body's cells understands. It looks like a silly technique, but it works!

Dr. Peter Levine speaks of trauma this way, "The paradox of trauma is that it has both the power to destroy and the power to transform and resurrect...heights of transformation and mastery, depends upon how we approach it" (Dr. Peter Levine, In an Unspoken Voice, How the Boy Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness, North Atlantic Books, Berkley, CA., 2010, page 37).

Everyone has trauma of one sort or another (some minor, others horrific), every single human being does, and it is personal and specific to each of us. Our approach to dealing with it is the key to whether we heal or not. God wants us healed. We can allow the pain to destroy us, or we can transform it into life lessons where we have an unique perspective in the healing to offer other hurting human beings. That lesson often is one of hope - "I will walk with you through your emotional pain because God has helped me. I know this pain intimately, and I know a technique that will help you."

So, how is the healing done? We physically need to get our elevated flight-fight hormones (Cortisol, Adrenaline, & others) lowered in our body (tapping is that tool), removing the barriers (high adrenaline, etc.that trap the memory in our body). We need the tapping to clear the cellular receptors and quiet our brain's limbic alarm system so it stops reacting to every sound, touch, and sight around us. Peace and safety comes back to live in us once again. And it is all God's created healing touch doing the work. 1 Peter 3:10-11, 2 Thessalonians 3:16, James 3:17

The hormones God created to keep us safe often go awry during trauma (someone's mistake or sin). They stay chronically elevated as our subconscious mind plays the trauma over and over again repetitively ("movie" in our head) throughout our present day, everyday, behind the scenes of our conscious mind (we may not even know the memory is still running). This is our subconscious mind reminding you remember never to get into that situation again. This is the way your mind tries to keep you safe.

That "movie" wears us down emotionally and physically because our bodies weren't designed to live well with elevated levels of stress hormones. And our own personal trauma reactions, often self-destroying behaviors mentioned above, compound life's problems. Disease ensues eventually.

What is one of God's answers to these problems? Tapping!

EFT most often neutralizes our reaction to the originating trauma, allowing God now to free us from the impact of those traumatic memories. The fog that lived between you and Him dissipates. You see Him for Who He is. You can now step into that relationship you always desired with Him. He's always been there, but the emotional fog, and your behavioral reactions to it, has kept you from fellowship with Him! This healing becomes real to you on all levels - emotional, spiritual, mental, and often physical. Romans 8:6.

Seriously consider starting your tapping journey today!  Let Him renew your mind! God is waiting for you with open arms!

Life's Thought Filters

Recently I was asked:  "Is this true?   That once we judge something is true or a fact, our brain actually filters the input we receive to support what we’ve already decided we believe."

My answer:  Yes, you have it!!

What happens from the "learning" of something is we build strong, thick neural pathways, like interstate highways, where our thoughts just tend to gravitate to.  Once we believe something and these neural highways are built that is exactly where we head - right down the same thought line we believe to be our truth, and we return to that pathway over and over again. We are then STUCK!  It kinda is a "dog returning to its vomit".

Canadian researcher Donald Hebbs said, and we repeat, "Neurons that fire together, wire together". In EFT, our motto is, "Neurons that don't fire together, never wire together" which means we can break down those pathways with tapping so we don't with a knee jerk reactionimmediately run down that same thought road.

2000 Nobel prize winner Eric Kandel taught us that ONE hour of thinking the same thought, be it positive or negative, DOUBLES the size of the neural pathway of that thought.  So, worry and rumination strengthens and almost guarantees us more worry and rumination because again we are stuck, literally, in that thought pattern.

Since we have kazillions of neural connections, so many of our thoughts intersect with other thoughts, binding them altogether in one big mass of lies. Cathy & I call these our lying emotions because of that idea.

Good part of this is with tapping comes the "generalization effect" where disconnecting some neural pathways often takes out big chunks of other rather unrelated life habits and patterns that were peripherally connected. This is why other thoughts or even physical afflictions or things just seem to go away without any tapping at all. Subtle personality changes happen and we often don't even notice.

I'm not sure, but you could be correct, that this a spiritual piece of EFT as much as it is a physiological piece.

God put these learning patterns in us to create safety for us. We learned what was good for us and what could harm us.

With Adam & Eve's sin, the whole system went awry. What was meant for good, like everything else, turned not so good when trauma or abuse is introduced into our lives. Instead of knowing that a yellow snake could bite and kill us (and we stay away from it), we now ruminate and worry about the "snake", trying to keep ourselves safe, but the worry finally digs us a big fat stress hole whereby our health can be ruined with chronic illnesses. Dumb example, but you get my gist!

Tapping is all about safety. We will attempt to heal WHEN we feel it is safe to do so. Those who "resist" or have secondary gain around getting better, either spiritually, emotionally, mentally, or physically, don't feel safe at that moment to step into that healing.

Sadly, some people never do feel safe and maybe never receive their healing on this side of heaven.

So, perceptions usually eventually turn into beliefs about who we are in Christ, which is pretty much the sum total of why we should be tapping! Everything else slides in under this one.

Words Becoming Reality

Listen to yourself speak!

Can we hear ourselves speaking negatively positive?

By putting a positive spin on a negative thought doesn't make either our speech or our thoughts positive! It's still negative.

Examples: "If we have an accident we have sufficient insurance to get us through."

"Even though genetically I will probably get cancer because my family is riddled with it, God will take care of me."

"I'm accident prone, so even if I fall off this ladder, I hope I will just bounce."

Although those are poor examples, and a good one eludes me at this moment (!), perhaps a better way of dealing with these types of thoughts that eventually become speech is to tap about our thoughts and feelings about an "accident" or "cancer" or the "genetics" or being "accident prone."

Something else is going on underneath in the subconscious mind that even allows these ideas to surface & to stick.

With some mindfulness, listening to the words we use, and some tapping, our speech patterns can change.

Why would we want to do this?

Words and thoughts become our reality. Dwelling on a thought for an hour doubles the nerve connections around that thought, hardening them into becoming our default thinking. Once the default thinking becomes our go-to thought about a topic, our subconscious mind often brings it to reality because nerve connections in the mind talk to nerve connection in every other body part.

Philippians 4:8 tells us, "Finally, brothers {and sisters}, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." ESV

What are Emotional Triggers?

Emotional triggers consists of thoughts, memories, or physical sensations that provoke an automatic underlying response in us. It just happens without any conscious thinking. A trigger does exactly what the word implies - it "triggers" us into a flashback type sensation or an automatic response that feels nearly exactly like the feelings we experience at the time the original trauma, abuse, or negative event occurred. It feels like we are re-experiencing the memory all over again.

The subconscious mind buries many deep painfully emotional memories for us for several decades after it happens, especially abuse memories, and in particular sexual abuse memories.
This is a protective mechanism instilled in us at creation. God knew we couldn't handle the fall-out at age 3 or 8 or 14, or any other age for that matter, when the event occurred, so it all gets buried.
Burying the hurtful memories (and that well could be a mild word - hurtful) sounds like a great idea!
It was in that moment, but TODAY those memories are running a chronic STRESS response behind the our conscious awareness. Our bodies weren't created to deal with ongoing chronic stress.
Eventually the emotional stress breaks down our body. The ongoing tension has to go somewhere if it isn't released.
It's kinda like a spring. It is designed to do a job but eventually it wears out and something breaks!
Tap, tap, tap!

We must settle down our emotional & physical mind. We must re-regulate ourselves. The Holy Spirit is right there with you to help. We must turn off the decades' old alarm bells, and triggers are those old alarm bells STILL ringing!
Triggers are messages from the Holy Spirit alerting us that there is still old faulty emotional information running behind the scene of our conscious mind.

He will bring to mind whatever memories need to be tapped on WHEN HE KNOWS YOU ARE READY AND CAN EMOTIONALLY HANDLE IT.

For those of us who have experienced very early emotional abuse, it may take months or years of sitting with the uncomfortable feelings and tapping. I often hear women say that they felt better after an hour of tapping, but then the "feelings came back." Yes, they do. This doesn't mean that your tapping and praying was wasted, it just means there is much more to do. Keep at it. Eventually the amygdala (alarm center) tends to settle down. It sometimes takes a lot of soothing to convince it that you are now safe.

Remember, EFT is NOT a substitute of good medical or psychological care, so take care of yourself by contacting your personal physician please.

Tapping Specifically Article

Good article from Andy Hunt! Tapping SPECIFICALLY is what is necessary to get the emotional job of neutralizing our negative feelings done.

I want to make one rather BIG and important addition.

In Step 5, last 2 sentences Andy writes, "For example: “Even though they are looking critically at me, I accept myself and how I feel”, etc. The aspect may yield to simple tapping or you may need to track back to memories of similar feelings to neutralise the source of the aspect."

The Set-up statement he uses as his example is, IMHO, still wayyyyyy too broad to be tapped on. It is imperative to "track back to memories" to get the tapping job done effectively.

If a client came to me and told me that exact same sentence "they are looking critically at me," wanting to tap on that issue, I would continue questioning the client asking, "When was a time when you felt as though someone was looking at you critically? Give me a concrete example."

That should afford the client the opportunity to respond with a statement such as, "Well, when I was 13 years old I had to stand up in class, and Mrs. Schmidt gave me the evil eye while I gave my report on the Battle of Gettysburg."

That's a pretty specific time "when" the client thought she was looked upon critically. I might even go on further to get even more specific by asking, "How do you feel now when thinking about that evil eye back then?" or "What exactly did Mrs. Schmidt evil eye look like to you and did you feel about that?"

When tapping we are digging for "emotions" to tap about? Facts are good, but facts aren't feelings, they are facts! Always, always ask yourself (or the client) how they "FEEL" about something they have just told you. They hopefully can tell you 2 things: (1) give the "feeling" an emotional name, such as sadness, anger, remorse, guilt, disdain, discouraged, dismissed, un-validated, ignored, etc. Most anything can be a "feeling" by simply adding the word "feeling" to the client or your words! (2) Hopefully the client (or yourself) can tell you WHERE (gut, head, eyes, shoulder, thigh, chest, heart, etc.) in their body they feel the "feeling" or emotion resides.

This information is ALL that is necessary for tapping specificity.

Here's what my classroom report Set-up and tapping might look like using the steps above:
"Even though I remember the time when I was 13 and I gave that Gettysburg report in Mrs. Schmidt's class, and she gave me the evil eye, right now I feel anger in my left chest, a tightening feeling, I deeply and completely, etc. - finish the acceptance statement. THAT IS SPECIFIC!

The reminder tapping statements would simply be: "this anger" or "this anger in my chest." Continue tapping those simple reminder statements on the acupuncture spots until the SUDS drops out to zero!

Go onto the next memory of the time when you felt you were looked at critically, and repeat the process.

When a client or yourself comes in with a broad statement such as "I'm looked at critically" there is probably a huge core issue underneath around self-esteem, etc.
Core issues take more work than just a few individual memories because a client's entire life viewpoint could well be built around that one thought (and sadly many of us have dozens of core issues we need to work on!)

That example I just typed about being 13 years old should give any experienced self-tapper or EFT Practitioner plenty of tapping material if the client has a core issue around the example.

There are probably 100s of other questions that can be asked. It's detective work! But the questions need to be specific while digging for feelings.

Once this memory/incident is tapped to a 0 SUDS, ask yourself or the client, "Do you have another memory of a time when you got a critical look, or a time when something similar happened?"

You continue to repeat this process until the problem is no longer the problem!
I will admit, and this is WHY I've written 4 EFT for Christians books, that any tapping questioning can go in a multitude of directions whereby you find dozens of other thoughts/feelings/events in life that need to be tapped about.

Sometimes the line of questioning gets bogged down or the client/yourself shuts down, and then you can use the advice I give you that I have already written out in detail in the EFT for Christians books.

Wonderfully written article by Andy. My opinion is the more specific we get in our tapping makes EFT so very much more effective.
God be praised!

Being Too Busy and Tapping

Why do we keep ourselves so busy? And why do we teach our children to do the same?

Check out the article below.

This is the "stress" that plays underneath in our unconscious mind, creating havoc and busy habits that run our neurotransmitters.

Once the habit is formed, and later the neurotransmitter levels drop even for just a few minutes, we become depressed, antsy, crabby, and anxious.

There must be a happy medium!

Good news is EFT can reset these habits, changing our circadian rhythms to something much more healthy!

Remember, EFT is NOT a substitute for good medical care, so please call your own personal physician if you need that type of help!
