Why Do I Need to Tap? Why Can't I Just Pray about All of This?

One of the questions that routinely pops up within the Christian EFT world is this, "Why can't I just pray about this, why should I tap?"

Often when I try to answer that question, my tongue gets tied up in my mouth and my answer sounds like I'm advocating that tapping is better than praying. That is not at all what I believe or what I wanted to say!

So, Ronda Stone, co-author of EFT for Christians, 52 Tapping Devotions, as usual, says it so much better than I do:

"I think it may be possible that some people respond better to prayer and some need tapping to break things loose to allow healing. Some may feel relief with the prayer but still tapping is needed for complete relief because the emotional pain is stuck in their body's cells. In my experience, I have seen the Lord move on people when I have only prayed {for them}, so one has to be aware of the direction the Lord is leading one -- to pray and tap, or to tap and pray.

People who have long standing emotional issues may think God has to fix them and they don't take responsibility for the part they may have played in the problem, thus believing God is the only one Who can act to help them, they don't accept that they play a part in their healing either.

Others who have some faulty reasoning or have been disappointed with God through prayer often pull away from Him. Those with that disappointment will respond better with tapping and prayer, and in fact, maybe even better than prayer alone."

Our God is a God of miracles! There is no doubt He is!

But God also requires for us to do work on this earth. Philippians 2:11-12 talks about "working out our salvation." Many believe Apostle Paul is discussing sanctification here. We are to "press on" toward heaven. God wants to deliver us, but He requires we participate in this earthly endeavor. Salvation in Jesus is a free done deal, but our earthly job is to give glory to the Lord and to work toward becoming more and more like Jesus, as we exhibit the Fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

His will for us is perfect. Jeremiah 29:11 assures us He has a good plan for our life.

We must pray, but some of us must also do our emotional tapping work to bring us into a calmer, more aware, less stressed, clearer space in life. Why? Early abusive events implant the pain into our body's cells. Prayer will relieve the spiritual content of the memories, but the "damage" remains in our body. Tapping often integrates the whole - body, mind, and spirit - to complete the healing we so desire.

God has always been there for us (Psalm 54:4). Our own emotional fog hides Him from our eyes. What a beautiful gift it is when tapping relieves the painful fog of past negative life events and allows us to see our Heavenly Father for Who He is!

Consider joining the thousands of Christians who have stepped forward for their healing as they tap.

The EFT for Christians website is chockful of goodies to assist you to learn to tap.

Addictive Behavior and Tapping

This Guardian article talks about how addiction isn't about what we have found ourselves addicted to, but what emotionally caused the need to use in the first place.

There are EFT Practitioners, including Christian Practitioners, now tapping with clients who have serious addictive problems, including drugs and alcohol, porn, gambling, food, work, sex, etc.

The anecdotal findings to date seem to certainly indicate, as Dr. Mate states, some deep emotional issues underlie the need for addictive substance or behavior. Eventually studies will follow; they always do.

Even more amazing is the tapping is working!! It is hard work because the body now has an intense connection to the addictive behavior, but there are people getting free of the substances/behaviors.

What can we do to help you?

Remember EFT is not a substitute for sound medical or psychological help. One with a serious addiction should always have a medical doctor know about tapping and agree to the patient using tapping to help themselves deal with the emotional issues.

52 Tapping Devotions #8 - 1 Corinthians 10:13

Devotion # 8 in EFT for Christians 52 Tapping Devotions I used 1 Corinthians 10:13 as the text.

As a R.N. I don't claim to be a Scripture expert!

But it was gratifying to see the translator of The Passion Translation to write out this verse as I "interpreted" it!

Here is TPT version of 1 Corinthians 1:13, "We all experience times of testing, which is normal for every human being. But God will be faithful to you. He will screen and filter the severity, nature, and timing of every test or trial you face so that you can bear it. And each test is an opportunity to trust him more, for along with every trial God has provided for you a way of escape that will bring you out of it victoriously."
Exactly!!! God has our lives completely under control even if we feel anything but overwhelm! He allows us these emotions and events and memories so we turn to Him for help.

In this day and age, EFT might be that help. EFT actually works, if it is used often and properly. Anecdotal stories abound of its efficacy! 100+ research studies prove that it works.
And our Lord promises He has already created a way out of our life's troubles.

If you are still CONSIDERING tapping, maybe time has arrived for you to commit to actually doing the process.

Example of Tapping in the Moment

Example of in the moment tapping:

A friend phoned to tell me she heard that the perp who sexually assaulted her was given an auto by her father.

She wasn't too happy with this.

I asked her to tap while she ranted.

No Set-up, no rounds, she just picked her own acupressure point and tapped while she yapped.

"There we go again. Reward the perp. Nothing for the victim. What are those people thinking? I'm so angry. My chest hurts. Why does no one care? I'm sad" and on and on she went.

5 minutes later she reported, "Ok, I'm finished. Let God figure it all out. I have things to do!"

Conversation over.

This piece of info could have ruined her day or even her week, or dragged out even longer, her health, had she continued to dwell on it.

She didn't. She tapped, giving it all to God.

PUNS in EFT

I received this email and I wanted to use it as a "teaching moment". Here is the email with a couple highlights:

"I wrote this today in the eye doctor’s office waiting for an appointment to have my eyes checked again for macular degeneration. While driving to the appointment, I was recalling Scriptures that tell us not to be anxious and I wondered how God expected us to never worry or be concerned. And that led to thinking about the difference between just worrying and having a legitimate concern that I was pretty sure God did not want me to turn a “BLIND EYE" — (pardon the pun). I surmised that genuine concerns were legitimate but God wanted us to give the concerns to Him and not just start worrying about them and coming to our own conclusions. My eyes don’t show macular degeneration, but he says I have 3 types of cataracts but they are not bad enough to have surgery yet.

One type on my left eye distorts lines when I am looking at them — the lines in road, the computer, tile work, etc. and we have MORE LINES IN OUR LINE OF VISION (sorry for the pun again, it is way past my bedtime) than we really notice. My left eye will distort the line in my vision on the left side, by bulging out an area of a line for a nano moment. Not all the time, just sometimes, but I am noticing it more than when it started a couple of weeks ago.

I have given the concern to God and am choosing to keep giving my worried thought to God as well and carry them. I’m tapping away as I pray."

Notice capitalized highlighted words she mentioned as "puns". They look like puns, feel like puns, but they aren't true puns!

This is EXACTLY what the subconscious mind (SC) does! When tapping pay close attention to the "wording" of what suddenly comes to mind and out of your mouth when tapping aloud. Your mind will be blown, as the SC loves homonyms, synonyms, rhymes, alliteration etc. It is in that WORD ASSOCIATION that the SC gains and thrives on perceptions! Often you GET in life EXACTLY what you SAY! You may not really mean it the way to wording sounds, but the SC mind is extremely literal and possesses no sense of humor! This is the power of the spoken word... God created the world by spoken word, etc. Your SC mind creates YOUR world by the power of your spoken word (and inner thoughts) too. Proverbs 25:11-13, Proverbs 12:18, Proverbs 16:24

When tapping pay attention to the words the Holy Spirit gives you. Often they are specific clues as to why you believe something, or the origin of where the beliefs comes from, or who led you to believe the statement in the first place.

These clues will likely give you specifics as related to your problem at hand. You then can tap on all of this new information as they likely are limiting beliefs in your life.

Remember, EFT is not a substitute for sound medical care, so please consult your own personal physician or psychologist before you use EFT.

Be blessed in Christ Jesus!

Christian Tapping and Certification

Andy's EFT article is right on!

For the most part, seasoned EFT trainers recommend LIVE In-Person EFT courses.

Why? Because if you want to be trained to tap with others, you need one on one mentoring, hours of it, while in a live class where tapping goofs and mistakes can be corrected and you personally experience the power of tapping.

Consider carefully when deciding what EFT class to take.

Email me! I have some of the free best advice on this topic just for you!

EFT is not a substitute for good sound medical or psychological advice. Consult your own personal physician for help when needed.

Past Events Effecting Us Today

Dr. Gabor Mate writes, "it's not what happened in the past that creates our present misery but the way we have allowed the past events to define how we are and experience ourselves in the present.

The greatest damage done by neglect, trauma, or emotional loss is not the immediate pain they inflict but the long-term distortions they induce in the way a developing child will continue to interpret the world and her situation in it. All too often these ill-conditioned implicit ((those held unconsciously) beliefs become self-fulfilling prophecies in our lives. We create meanings from our unconscious interpretations of early events, and then we forge our present experiences from the meanings we've created."

This is where we are beginning to find EFT assisting us in our walk with Christ, our Savior.

When we can tap, moving aside our past emotional feelings to allow ourselves to heal, God can then use us in His Kingdom.

Have you considered tapping?

Remember, EFT is NOT a substitute for medical or psychological help, so please consult your own personal physician for that assistance.

Subconscious Memory and Tapping

Joe Dispenza says it better than I do, "What most people don't know is that when they think about a highly charged emotional experience, we make the brain fire in the EXACT same sequences and patterns as before; we are firing and wiring their brains to the past by reinforcing those circuits into ever more hardwired networks. We also duplicate the same chemicals in the brain and body (in varying degrees) as if we are experiencing the event again in THAT moment.

It is this unconscious (or subconscious - Freud used these words interchangeably) repetition that trains the body to remember that emotional state, equal or better than the conscious mind does. When the body IS the mind - that's called a habit.

Think about that: 5 percent of the mind is conscious (some put that number at less than 1-2%), struggling against the 95% that is running subconscious AUTOMATIC (emotional) programs. We've memorized a set of behaviors so well that we have become automatic, habitual body-mind.

So, a person may CONSCIOUSLY want to be happy, healthy or free, but the experience of hosting 20 (or 30-40) years of suffering and the repeated cycling of those (neuro)chemicals of pain and pity have subconsciously conditioned the body to be in a (negative) habitual state. We are no longer aware of what we are thinking, doing, or feeling.

And when the 5% that is conscious is going (upstream) against the 95% that is running the subconscious automatic programs, the 95% is so reflexive that it only take one STRAY thought or a single (sensory, mostly) stimulus from the environment to turn on the automatic programs AGAIN. Then we're back to the same old, same old - thinking the same (negative, toxic) thoughts, performing the same actions, but expecting something different to happen in our lives.

When we try to regain control, this is when the body signals the brain to begin talking us out of our conscious goals (self-sabotage). Our internal chatter (critical internal voice) comes up with a battery or reasons why we should not attempt to do anything out of the ordinary, not break out of the habituated state of being (go to the gym, eat less, nag less, complain less, exercise more) that we're used to. Subconscious mind will pick up all of our weaknesses, which it knows and FOSTERS, and hurl them at us one by one!

We create worst-case scenarios in our minds so that we don't have to rise above those familiar feelings. Because when we try to break the internal CHEMICAL order we have made so second nature, the body goes into chaos. Its internal badgering feels nearly irresistible - and plenty of times, we succumb."

So, what has God given us to fix this?  EFT!

Remember EFT is not a substitute for your own personal physician's medical care, so take to phone/visit him as necessary before tapping.

Prejudice & EFT

Prejudice is a fact-less and usually negative attitude toward members of a particular group. Common features of prejudice include negative feelings, stereotypical beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against that group of people. Many definitions of prejudice exist, most of us pick up negative ideas of others based on generalizations from opinions from others, usually those in authority, or ones who are older and deemed wiser and more experienced than we are.

Prejudice can be based on just about anything including sex, race, age, sexual orientations, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, dress, educational background, and religious beliefs.

Most beliefs, including prejudices, are nothing more than arbitrary interpretations of another person’s viewpoints. Events happen around us in the world, but the meaning we give the events is our own personal perception of that event.  It’s these perceptions that shape our life and the actions, thoughts, and behaviors within that existence.

Please don’t misunderstand me. Some of our beliefs are needed to keep us safe.

Should we see a man (that’s an assumption, as I just as easily could have said a woman!) wielding a gun a half a block away, yelling at the top of his lungs about his rights being violated, we would have an immediate “perception” that the situation is not safe and we should duck behind a building until the police have that corridor under control.

We have made a correct assumption that the gun swinging man just might harm us. An incorrect assumption would be that all men of a certain skin color are threatening, whether they hold a gun or no. It’s even more prejudicial if we base that opinion on just this one incident.

Genesis 1:25-31 talks about creation of man. We were created in God’s image. The word Adam simply means “man”. It is not the specific name of the first male creature God created; therefore, there is a male man and a female man – Adam and Eve. They were created male and female for the perpetuation of the human race.

Deuteronomy 10:17, Job 34:19, Romans 2:11, and Acts 10:34 specifically state that God shows no partiality or favoritism. He loves us all no matter who we are or what we are. Galatians 3:38 clearly states, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

So, how do racial, sexual, ethnic, etc. prejudices get formed?

As an infant all our needs must be met by our parents or other caregivers, otherwise we will die. This care includes teaching us all that we need to know to survive in life from how to dress ourselves, eat good food, drive an automobile, act responsibly, how to interact with others, and all other opinions that we feel are unique to us and we came to form freely.

But did we form all those opinion freely? Research science shows clearly we didn’t do this thinking on our own – someone taught us. And some of that training, so to speak, can be epigenetic biases. Another article for another day!

Those opinions and thoughts about the world can come literally from anyone. Our parents, grandparents, older siblings, teachers, pastors, friends, and can include other gang members or people we meet hanging out on a street corner, including the local merchant. As we see behaviors of others played out in our life, we accept them as truth, whether they are moral or immoral behaviors. The filters through which we see those behaviors are based on what we learned early in life as children. It’s the patterns we acquired as we matured that play out later in life in our own behavior.

As children we learn red means stop and green means go. We just as easily learn that apples are yummy to eat, but pine cones really don’t taste too good. And so it is with prejudices. Prejudices are learned traits based on someone else’s opinion.

If someone in higher authority than you rants on about how awful German people are, you have no reason to disagree, and so you believe the well-read woman is correct. At that point, you file away a prejudice that German people are bad. Most likely, because that is “your opinion”, you will state it freely even though you have little reason or experience to know that “German people are awful” on a personal basis. In fact, you literally have no idea in your daily encounters who is German and who isn’t, but should someone state specifically that they are German, your guard, based on previous beliefs and teachings, will come up.

Your heart rate will rise, hearing become acute, listening for any dangerous signals the German person may make, breathing becomes more rapid, blood sugar rises, as does your blood pressure. This all happens unconsciously based on previous information someone else taught you.

Your amygdala just threw you into “Flight, Fight, and Freeze” mode, surging neurochemicals throughout your body based on those prior acquired perceptions. Specifically, you are ready to run or fight and you have no idea what just happened. Prejudicial thoughts just sabotaged your neurochemistry. And you may have no idea why it all just happened, until you investigate by asking yourself about the situation.

Once you get to know the “German” in your midst, you realize he poses no threat to you, and then your neurochemistry will settle down, as you relax.

But what happens when the “German” in your midst is not given a chance to “prove” himself a non-threatening person? This is where prejudice turns violent. We say things to the person we shouldn’t, bullying begins, fists start flying, and soon physical damage is done all based on someone else’s idea of who is good or bad.

As we look back through history, many horrific incidents have taken place all based on someone else’s perception of what was good or bad in life. World War I was started by one person assassinating a political figure who was thought to be unfair. Millions of people died because of an opinion. Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s, had 1.5 million people killed to enforce his opinion that Cambodia should remain an agrarian society. Somewhere Pol Pot was taught modern society was evil.

Most political debacles occur due to someone’s opinion. Often these turn deadly for those around the leader.

So, how should we handle prejudices with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT, tapping)?

Prejudicial beliefs can be handled like any other problem a client could bring to us. Different techniques could be used to undo the basis of the prejudice.

I personally would want to tap, asking the Holy Spirit, if there is any trauma suffered at the hands of the one against which the prejudice stands. Often this is the case when sexual abuse has been perpetrated.

If a male has abused a young lady, often that woman wants little to nothing to do with males. This is a prejudice, too. Once we tap away the underlying emotions of the trauma, most often this frees the client to see other males in a completely different light, understanding that the abuse was perpetrated by one particular male, not the entire male race!

The same would pertain to a young African American boy who was bullied or beat-up by a gang of Caucasian males. Later in life that same man might come to believe that all white males are dangerous bullies, locking the African American male into a life that keeps him from ever being successful because he won’t involve himself in white society. This becomes a prejudice that denies a person the fullness and abundance talked about in Psalm 31:19. God wants us to have an abundant life filled with love, beauty, and laughter.

I invite you to pray and think about what prejudices in life you have against other people, institutions, churches, etc., which might be holding you back in life from doing your best for God.

What opinions do you hold in life that may have no factual basis at all, except what you heard someone tell you those ideas decades ago?

Consider hiring an EFT practitioner to explore and eliminate those prejudicial viewpoints from your life, allowing God to open up opportunities you never considered for yourself. God just might have a very special job for you to do for Him!

EFT is not a substitute for medical care, so please take personal responsibility for all your physical and emotional needs.

Dr. Gabor Mate and Tapping

Dr. Gabor Mate writes, "The automatic mind, the reactive product of brain circuits, constantly interprets the present in the light of past conditioning. In its psychological respones it has great difficulty telling the past from the present, especially whenever it is emotionally aroused. A trigger in the present will set off emotions that were programmed perhaps decades ago at a much more vulnerable time in a person's life. What seems like a reaction to some present circumstance is, in fact, a reliving of past emotional experiences.
Whenever a person 'overreacts' - that is, reacts in a way that seems inappropriately exaggerated to the situation at hand....the reaction is not to the irritant in the present but to some buried hurt in the past.
Many of us look back puzzled on some emotional explosion and ask ourselves, 'What the heck was that about?'"
And that is indeed the question we should ask ourselves any time we feel or react in a way we know is not God honoring - Lord God, what was that about? And then tap negatively on the memory He gives you so as to begin or continue the process of healing He has started in so many of us!

Trauma Study

I've previously read (and taught) that we have 3 days after a trauma before the hippocampus decides whether to encode a trauma permanently, or whether to let it go.

I've seen this study below a couple of times, but it is time to share it. This study was done on mice, so does it also effect humans? Good possibility. We share a similar genome.

This study suggests we have 10 (TEN) days after a traumatic event to ameliorate the issue. Simply stated perhaps getting or receiving some kind of adequate emotional support is sufficient to let the event pass from our psyche without possibly permanently encoding and turning into PTSD. This would have all kinds of profound implications for disasters, accidents, deaths, etc. Could EFT do the trick here? Wouldn't it be wonderful to find out?

Anyway, here is the quote:

According to Anusha Krishnan at the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India:
“A new study by Indian scientists has gained insights into how a single instance of severe stress can lead to delayed and long-term psychological trauma. The work pinpoints key molecular and physiological processes that could be driving changes in brain architecture. The team, led by Sumantra Chattarji from the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), Bangalore, have shown that a single stressful incident can lead to increased electrical activity in a brain region known as the amygdala. This activity sets in late, occurring ten days after a single stressful episode, and is dependent on a molecule known as the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor (NMDA-R), an ion channel protein on nerve cells known to be crucial for memory functions. Previously, Chattarji’s group had shown that a single instance of acute stress had no immediate effects on the amygdala of rats. But ten days later, these animals began to show increased anxiety, and delayed changes in the architecture of their brains, especially the amygdala.”
