Prejudice & EFT

Prejudice is a fact-less and usually negative attitude toward members of a particular group. Common features of prejudice include negative feelings, stereotypical beliefs, and a tendency to discriminate against that group of people. Many definitions of prejudice exist, most of us pick up negative ideas of others based on generalizations from opinions from others, usually those in authority, or ones who are older and deemed wiser and more experienced than we are.

Prejudice can be based on just about anything including sex, race, age, sexual orientations, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, dress, educational background, and religious beliefs.

Most beliefs, including prejudices, are nothing more than arbitrary interpretations of another person’s viewpoints. Events happen around us in the world, but the meaning we give the events is our own personal perception of that event.  It’s these perceptions that shape our life and the actions, thoughts, and behaviors within that existence.

Please don’t misunderstand me. Some of our beliefs are needed to keep us safe.

Should we see a man (that’s an assumption, as I just as easily could have said a woman!) wielding a gun a half a block away, yelling at the top of his lungs about his rights being violated, we would have an immediate “perception” that the situation is not safe and we should duck behind a building until the police have that corridor under control.

We have made a correct assumption that the gun swinging man just might harm us. An incorrect assumption would be that all men of a certain skin color are threatening, whether they hold a gun or no. It’s even more prejudicial if we base that opinion on just this one incident.

Genesis 1:25-31 talks about creation of man. We were created in God’s image. The word Adam simply means “man”. It is not the specific name of the first male creature God created; therefore, there is a male man and a female man – Adam and Eve. They were created male and female for the perpetuation of the human race.

Deuteronomy 10:17, Job 34:19, Romans 2:11, and Acts 10:34 specifically state that God shows no partiality or favoritism. He loves us all no matter who we are or what we are. Galatians 3:38 clearly states, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

So, how do racial, sexual, ethnic, etc. prejudices get formed?

As an infant all our needs must be met by our parents or other caregivers, otherwise we will die. This care includes teaching us all that we need to know to survive in life from how to dress ourselves, eat good food, drive an automobile, act responsibly, how to interact with others, and all other opinions that we feel are unique to us and we came to form freely.

But did we form all those opinion freely? Research science shows clearly we didn’t do this thinking on our own – someone taught us. And some of that training, so to speak, can be epigenetic biases. Another article for another day!

Those opinions and thoughts about the world can come literally from anyone. Our parents, grandparents, older siblings, teachers, pastors, friends, and can include other gang members or people we meet hanging out on a street corner, including the local merchant. As we see behaviors of others played out in our life, we accept them as truth, whether they are moral or immoral behaviors. The filters through which we see those behaviors are based on what we learned early in life as children. It’s the patterns we acquired as we matured that play out later in life in our own behavior.

As children we learn red means stop and green means go. We just as easily learn that apples are yummy to eat, but pine cones really don’t taste too good. And so it is with prejudices. Prejudices are learned traits based on someone else’s opinion.

If someone in higher authority than you rants on about how awful German people are, you have no reason to disagree, and so you believe the well-read woman is correct. At that point, you file away a prejudice that German people are bad. Most likely, because that is “your opinion”, you will state it freely even though you have little reason or experience to know that “German people are awful” on a personal basis. In fact, you literally have no idea in your daily encounters who is German and who isn’t, but should someone state specifically that they are German, your guard, based on previous beliefs and teachings, will come up.

Your heart rate will rise, hearing become acute, listening for any dangerous signals the German person may make, breathing becomes more rapid, blood sugar rises, as does your blood pressure. This all happens unconsciously based on previous information someone else taught you.

Your amygdala just threw you into “Flight, Fight, and Freeze” mode, surging neurochemicals throughout your body based on those prior acquired perceptions. Specifically, you are ready to run or fight and you have no idea what just happened. Prejudicial thoughts just sabotaged your neurochemistry. And you may have no idea why it all just happened, until you investigate by asking yourself about the situation.

Once you get to know the “German” in your midst, you realize he poses no threat to you, and then your neurochemistry will settle down, as you relax.

But what happens when the “German” in your midst is not given a chance to “prove” himself a non-threatening person? This is where prejudice turns violent. We say things to the person we shouldn’t, bullying begins, fists start flying, and soon physical damage is done all based on someone else’s idea of who is good or bad.

As we look back through history, many horrific incidents have taken place all based on someone else’s perception of what was good or bad in life. World War I was started by one person assassinating a political figure who was thought to be unfair. Millions of people died because of an opinion. Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s, had 1.5 million people killed to enforce his opinion that Cambodia should remain an agrarian society. Somewhere Pol Pot was taught modern society was evil.

Most political debacles occur due to someone’s opinion. Often these turn deadly for those around the leader.

So, how should we handle prejudices with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT, tapping)?

Prejudicial beliefs can be handled like any other problem a client could bring to us. Different techniques could be used to undo the basis of the prejudice.

I personally would want to tap, asking the Holy Spirit, if there is any trauma suffered at the hands of the one against which the prejudice stands. Often this is the case when sexual abuse has been perpetrated.

If a male has abused a young lady, often that woman wants little to nothing to do with males. This is a prejudice, too. Once we tap away the underlying emotions of the trauma, most often this frees the client to see other males in a completely different light, understanding that the abuse was perpetrated by one particular male, not the entire male race!

The same would pertain to a young African American boy who was bullied or beat-up by a gang of Caucasian males. Later in life that same man might come to believe that all white males are dangerous bullies, locking the African American male into a life that keeps him from ever being successful because he won’t involve himself in white society. This becomes a prejudice that denies a person the fullness and abundance talked about in Psalm 31:19. God wants us to have an abundant life filled with love, beauty, and laughter.

I invite you to pray and think about what prejudices in life you have against other people, institutions, churches, etc., which might be holding you back in life from doing your best for God.

What opinions do you hold in life that may have no factual basis at all, except what you heard someone tell you those ideas decades ago?

Consider hiring an EFT practitioner to explore and eliminate those prejudicial viewpoints from your life, allowing God to open up opportunities you never considered for yourself. God just might have a very special job for you to do for Him!

EFT is not a substitute for medical care, so please take personal responsibility for all your physical and emotional needs.

Christian EFT and Thanksgiving - Change Your Life!

Combining EFT with thanksgiving has a powerful effect over our psyches and our physical health.

Let me explain.

What thoughts go through your mind when your grandchild profusely thanks you for a gift you have given her? You feel delighted that you were able to delight her, don’t you? And your reaction to all these heartwarming feelings is what? You want to give her more and more! The more pleased her reaction the more you want to please her in order to elicit again and again that same reaction that warms your own heart!

How do you think God the Father feels when we are grateful to Him for His mercies and gifts to us?  Right, the exact same way! Gratitude begets blessings and blessings should beget more gratitude. Positive attitudes moves one forward; negative attitudes pushes one backwards.  Honor God with our thanksgiving, so more blessings come!

It also proves to God that you really are thankful for the circumstances right here and now, no matter how good or bad the issues really are. And when situations improve, how would you know that they have improved except to have been where things weren’t good at all. Gratitude gives us a rule from which to judge future events.

Psalm 149:4 reads, “For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.” Psalm 35:27 says, “May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.”

God wants to give us more and more, but we must be grateful for what we have right now. Right now may not look too prosperous, but God expects gratitude for what it is. Like that grandchild of yours, the more excited you are with God’s blessings, the more He will shower upon you.

God does allow tests in our lives to see if we are faithful to trust Him, but He also supplies us according to His riches and favor, as stated in Philippians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

So, what does any of this have to do with EFT?

First, confess your ingratitude to God. Tap and confess your faithlessness, mistrust, and lack of belief in Him for Who He is.

Now, begin a new habit of tapping regularly and thanking God for every little thing in your life!

However, tap and thank God for what you want as if it has already come to pass.  Tap in the past tense.  “Thank you, Jesus, for my healed right knee,” thank you, Lord, for our amazing relationship,” thank you, Father, for our repaired plumbing (within a budget I can afford),” “thank you, God, for beautiful new car I needed to get to work.”

It may not be true today, but you would like it to be true, and you would like God to make it so.

Proverbs 6:2 tells us we keep ourselves trapped by our own words, “You have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.”

When we talk negatively about our life, what we say will come to pass. Stop saying what you don’t want. Thank God in gratitude and praise for what He has given you, and pray the same for what you want as if it has already happened. Speak it into existence. “It is written: ‘I believed; therefore I have spoken.’ Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,” 2 Corinthians 4:13.

Our own words trap us into a life we don’t want. Negative words stop God’s blessings in our life. We can literally prophesy our own future. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21) are powerful words! Stop speaking problems into your life.

Pay attention, and become mindful of what comes out of your mouth!  When you catch yourself saying something negative about your life, yourself, or another person, make a mental note of it as something to later investigate, asking the Holy Spirit the source of the thought. And then tap it away, breaking that habit. But more importantly, when you stop yourself, change the wording to something positive. Speak it as if it has already happened. Keep all negative language out of the statement. Be careful you aren’t making a negative statement in a positive manner!

When time allows, bring forth into your mind while tapping, the source of the memories that led you to believe God won’t bless you. Negatively tap (here is the appropriate use of the negative)  away all the hindrances of these beliefs, and watch your attitude change and shift toward thanking God for all He has given you.

Declare out loud what you know God wants of you and allow our God to change the circumstances to make that promise come alive in you. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” is written in Philippians 4:13. Apostle Paul understood adversity. Scholars aren’t completely sure where Paul was when he penned this to the Philippians, but the consensus is he was in prison in Rome awaiting eventual death. Now, that’s adversity!

Allow no one to talk you out of what God has asked you to do. Take a big step of faith and move out, declaring out loud the truth of your purpose and mission. Expect God to move, and He will most certainly do so.

As we Christian EFT practitioners tap with hundreds of people a year, we see this exact process play out time after time. Once we have used tapping to eliminate the negative memories and the accompanying reaction to the events in our life, we sit back and watch God motivate and prosper that brother or sister with whom we tapped. I’ve personally seen amazing sights God has brought about through EFT. Women moving out into ministries that God had set up for them to do. Others are writing music for God. Books are written to the glory of God. God is using these healed women (and men) to forward His Kingdom – they are truly His hands and feet.

As the shift comes, and it will come, God will amaze you at the blessings He will shower upon you once you change your mind and begin speaking out the positive truth of what He wants to give you, and thanking Him for what He has already given you,  because He loves you more than anything else that exists.

It's Ok to Not Be Ok

Recently, I have heard from so very many Christians who feel so very guilty about not feeling ok.

Many of them have stresses and strains of life. Marriage, finances, children, jobs, elderly parents, neighbors, and friends' problems weigh them down. Often times they have no idea where to turn and the guilt sets in because they feel overburdened when they don't rest in and rely upon God's help.

Well, what if Christian Emotional Freedom Techniques (CEFT) is God's answer?

I try to explain to these hurting brothers and sisters in Christ that God really is listening, but sometimes He answers in ways we don't expect.

Few of us would hesitate to take an antibiotic for an infection, or have an x-ray done when we think we've broken a bone, so why do we hesitate to do some tapping when we feel stressed?

EFT, especially done from a Christian perspective, is no less a healing modality than any other method done to make us feel better, and according to studies and much anecdotal evidence, it is much more effective than talk therapy because we are actually untriggering ourselves with the tapping.

Think about learning EFT today. Join me in Milwaukee for classes to do just that. I have one coming up this week - September 10-13th, 2015, and the classes for 2016 are listed on my website EFTforChristians.com .

We need and are looking for more Christian EFT practitioners, so if the Holy Spirit is leading you in that direction, consider joining me for EFT classes soon.

If you are a Christian EFT practitioner, please contact me, as I would love to add you to our Practitioner list.

EFT is never a substitute for medical care. Call your personal physician should you need medical attention. Please take responsibility for all of your own emotional and physical health. God bless you!

Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

“The expressed acknowledged sin has lost all its power. It has been revealed and judged as sin. A person is no longer alone with his evil for he has cast off his sin in confession and handed it over to God” Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Wow, that is a mouthful, isn’t it, for a Christian?  James 5:16 says something similar – “Hence, declare your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may find healing”, another version reads, “So always tell each other the wrong things you have done. Then pray for each other. Do this so that God can heal you. Anyone who lives the way God wants can pray, and great things will happen”. Proverbs 28:13 reads, "He who conceals his sins prospers not, but he who confesses and forsakes them obtains mercy". And, of course, we have those wonderful verses in Psalm 103, “He pardons all your iniquities, He heals all your ills. He redeems your life from destruction; He crowns you with kindness and compassion. He fills your lifetime with good; your youth is renewed like an eagle’s”. And finally, Psalm 103 verse 12 reads, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He put our transgressions from us”.
“Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a theologian, martyr, a spiritual writer, a musician, a pastor, and an author of poetry and fiction. The integrity of his Christian faith and life, and the international appeal of his writings, have received broad recognition and admiration, all of which has led to a consensus that he is one of the theologians of his time whose theological reflections might lead future generations of Christians into creating a new more spiritual and responsible millennium. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian famous for his stand against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party. His beliefs and convictions ultimately cost him his life in a Nazi concentration camp. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was one of the most famous theologians and martyrs of the 20th century”.  http://www.dbonhoeffer.org/
So, what does this mean to us Christian Emotional Freedom Techniques users? Rev. Bonhoeffer was an amazing example to us. He stood up for what he felt was the moral thing to do. He loved integrity. He obviously loved his Savior, too, as he died for his Christian beliefs. I believe us EFT followers need to help create a “new more spiritual and responsible millennium”, too. We need to open our hearts to understanding the emotional plight of humankind. EFT has an enormous capacity to heal. It heals both emotionally and physically, as God wills.
But, I think, it needs to go even deeper than that. EFT, if allowed, can heal spiritually, too. We need to take the admonition of those Scriptures I typed out in that first paragraph to heart. We need to help cleanse each other from those sins and the consequences of those sins. How many of us are carrying around guilt, resentment, hatred, remorse, etc. from the countless ill fated, irresponsible things we have done? I know that I am guilty.
Through EFT, we have a chance to confess those sins to each other, and then help the transgressor tap away the emotional impact of that sin, allowing him/her to once again feel the peace that a complete relationship with our God brings. God is faithful to forgive us, but we first need come to Him in confession. He wants us back into His fold & He wants us whole, so we can be a servant to others.
He also has given us an amazing gift in EFT. After we have confessed our sin, by tapping, we can also cleanse our soul of the leftover emotions brought on by that sin.  God is faithful to remove that garbage, too.  Some people like hanging onto the remorse or guilt, as they feel it will remind them never to do the sin again. I honor and respect that, if that is their desire.  As for me, I knew when I had learned my lesson & I was ready to have the emotional consequences of my sins removed & taken from me. I don’t plan to forget any of that pain anytime soon. There are other times when our emotions are actually the result of the sin of others. We need those repercussions removed to, in order to restore a right relationship with God.
Often, the repercussions themselves, those resulting from the sin of another, become sin to us. We harbor resentment or anger or even hatred for the person who messed with us. Those sins also need to be confessed and the resulting emotional feedback tapped away. Once we lock ourselves into that trap of feeling sorry for ourselves, it is a long and difficult road back. I know, for a fact, that EFT can eliminate that road, if we choose wisely.
I, as an EFT practitioner, have had the privilege of doing just what I have discussed here. I have heard stories from Christian clients who tell me they have never “told a soul about” thus and such incident. At that point, I will ask if that sin has been confessed. If it has, that is wonderful. If it hasn’t, I invite the client, with my help, to do so right there on the spot, while we tap.
Spiritually, I cannot see how any relationship with another human being can be repaired until we fix the vertical relationship with our heavenly Father. Confession comes first, and then we humbly go ask forgiveness from the party we injured.
As a Christian practitioner, I feel confession is a vital part of the EFT process. We need to keep our priorities in the correct order, so that our heavenly Father will toss our sins as far as the east is from the west, as He remembers them no more. If He remembers them “no more”, then why should we continue to carry around the emotional consequences of those sins, beating ourselves up day after day? I don’t believe that to be the best description of an abundant life (“I have come that they might have life and have it to the full” John 10:10b).  God can heal us spiritually & emotionally through EFT, if we avail ourselves of this wonderful gift.  We just need to ask Him.

Fullness in Jesus Procedure

For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification (Romans 14:17-19). All of us want peace and joy in Christ.

We crave it in our lives. EFT for Christian’s version of Gary Craig’s “Personal Peace Procedure” is called Fullness in Jesus Procedure. All of us have loads and loads of negative personal stuff in our background. Every single human being does. Anyone who denies this is simply not being honest with him/herself. It is simply impossible to not have had a hurtful event, a dismissive memory, or some childhood or adulthood painful memory. No matter how wonderful or diligent a parent is, somewhere along the line (s)he lost their patience with a child. Undoubtedly, you were that child. I kiddingly tell people that if you can’t come up with a long list of nasty events in your life, then you must have been born on Neptune because you certainly weren’t born here on earth!

The Fullness in Jesus Procedure is relatively simply.
 1) Purchase a small memo or notebook that will fit in your pocket or purse.

 2) Write down every single event, big, little, or in between, that had any kind of a negative impact on you during your life. Even if you feel a memory has absolutely no emotional impact to you, write it down anyway. You remembered it; it has impact somewhere within your subconscious.

3) With due diligence you should come up with several hundred memories or events. I had about 378!

4) Rate each event on a scale of 0-10.

5) Begin working on this process by picking out the events with the highest SUDS and doing those first. Tap on the events or memories until you have completely resolved everything around them. If other aspects or other emotions come up about the memory, as you tap, write them down in your memo book to do separately, unless you have time during the current tapping session to address them. Get yourself to 0 on the SUDS level on each emotion.

6) Daily, work on at least one memory. Preferably, several, if you can make time to do so. Each event probably will only take you a few minutes. By eliminating multiple events a week, you will begin to notice a difference in your life, as the small negative things move out, creating Jesus’ peace within you.

7) If an event seems to have no SUDS attached to it, tap it anyway. I would apply 8 to 10 rounds of Clinical EFT to it, based on your best guess of what the emotion might be and what the SUDS might be. A guess is good enough here to get the job done. If the memory needs more work, the tapping will be enough to break it loose so it becomes more evident to you.

8) Continue through the entire list, even if you begin to feel remarkably better. It is imperative that you clean up everything you can remember in your life. If you don’t, it will return and you will have to tap on it anyway. These things tend to return at the most inopportune times!

9) You may simply tap the emotion attached to each of these memories, or do a “tell the story” or “movie technique”, if it is a longer story with multiple emotional events in it. There really is no right or wrong way to do the Fullness in Jesus Procedure. Little will change in your life unless you make some effort to use the process God implanted in us for this emotional relief.

10) Now, go on to the subsequent events that have the next highest SUDS attached to them. As you proceed along, you will begin to notice that events with similar emotional feelings will begin to fade away of their own accord. This is what this process should do. You are beginning to eliminate “table legs”, collapsing the many tables as you go along.

11) You may well even begin to notice that issues that you haven’t even tapped on yet have already disappeared. Our subconscious knows how it filed all these negative emotional events. Sometimes, it just eliminates some of the bigger files in one swoop!

12) Feel into your body and observe some of your day to day physical symptoms, too. You may tap on those, or watch them, as they may well disappear as you tap on the emotional. Remember, you have stored these negative memories somewhere in your body. That is the essence of the science of “bodymind”!

13) You may even want to make some notes about what your starting weight or blood pressure was. Write a small descriptive paragraph about how you feel generally in life.

After a month or so of daily tapping, check in with yourself. See your progress! It is easy to forget where you started when tapping. Not only do the emotions disappear, but sometimes you may even forget what you felt like before you commenced the Fullness in Jesus Procedure.

Now, be mindful! Pay attention to how day to day affairs change around you. You probably will find yourself less upset by daily aggravations. How are the grief, sadness, or spouse’s annoying habits bothering you now?

The small bothersome aspects of life will simply begin to melt away, leaving you with Apostle Paul’s “peace that surpasses all understanding” that he speaks of in the Book of Philippians Chapter 4 verses 6 & 7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.

That is exactly what Clinical EFT does for us Christians. We repent, we confess our sins to God, and then God, through tapping, restores us to a life of peace and joy, just as He promises in Holy Scripture.

Blessed Tapping!

Curiously, as I read the big, long article I posted below, it hit me that the author put into words something I think the Holy Spirit has been whispering to me for the past 3 weeks. He whispers and I ponder for awhile, and then He clarifies, just as He always does to me through an article or a conversation. I'm very quiet during this contemplation period, not even articulating to Brad what I'm thinking, only because it is a stirring in my soul, and I finally wised up to know Who is speaking. I need to await His pleasure and conclusion of what He has to tell me. He just did it again! Wow! As I tap with clients, particularly the non-Christians ones, and specifically the ones who use the term "Universe" as their theological base, I've wondered how do I gently, but passionately bring in God as a refutation to their concept of "Universe" without being completely disrespectful and coming off, like so many Christians do, in an alienating manner. I need a God glorifying way to say He is in charge without coming off looking like a Bible thumper. I want to be a bridge between these crazy new agers and us Christians. I have the mechanism in my hand. Now, how do I say it kindly? In their language, but not compromising my own? I haven't figured out how to do that just yet, but this Matt guy's article says to me exactly what I have been thinking! We can use Christian EFT as that bridge, pointing the new agers to the King of the Universe, the real King! I believe that is why I'm so empathic about this going to the churches, and then coming back out of the churches. This is language these unbelievers understand. The Church can talk to them without compromising its own personal belief system! Anyway, I will continue to ponder the exact line I need to say. It will come. It will be a classic. It will be God's words to those I tap with; those He has chosen to hear these exact, perfect words of His. I just find it so curious how and what He uses to talk with us. Now that my soul is quiet; much of the overwhelming emotions released; the ceaseless chatter gone, I can actually listen. It is incredibly refreshing! http://mattstone.blogs.com/christian/2009/08/energy-healing-a-christian-theological-appraisal.html For more information, go to www.eftforchristians.com To schedule a free EFT consultation coaching session, email me at eftforchristians@gmail.com Always remember to take complete responsibility for your own health and well-being.

EFT Makes Me Laugh

EFT makes me laugh inside. The effectiveness on the little things in life is astounding. EFT just plainly makes life so much improved.
Monday, my husband announces to me, after I asked him several times what was bugging him (I always notice something is wrong with him long before he does for himself), that he is overwhelmed. I inquire about what. He tells me the details. I ask, “Have you tapped?” Sadly, as usual, the answer was, “no”.
We were eating lunch out when he decided to tell me how overwhelmed he was.  I never care where we are or what we are doing, I tell him to just begin tapping – fingertips under the table, and let’s go.
I start him off with “overwhelmed”, and then I add “discombobulated & frustrated” to the tapping mix, after he explained his feelings.  At that point, I just leave him alone, as he knows quite well how to handle it; he’s just not to the point where he recognizes the problem.  I guess we make a good team. I notice the problem & he taps for himself, fixing his own issues.
Now, the part that makes me laugh is this:  It took him all of 90 seconds to discharge the frustration, “discombobulation”, & overwhelm completely.  Here, he has been fighting the feelings for 5 or 6 hours, doing some disorganized stunts, getting nothing accomplished, by his own admission, and 90 seconds of tapping eliminated the entire issue. “I can’t believe how calm I am,” were his words as he stopped tapping. His SUDS dropped from an 8 to 0 in 90 seconds flat!
I told him that he would go home and in less than an hour accomplish everything he hadn’t fixed in the previous 5 to 6 hours. He agreed. He knows well how the science works – put the blood back in the neo-cortex and suddenly thinking makes sense!
About 2 hours later, he phoned to inform me, all was accomplished in about the hour I said + he had an added bonus. For the past 3 weeks, he thought he had 2 huge weekend long events happening on the exact same weekend. He wanted to attend both events as much of as possible, and he was getting flak from other participants because they wanted him to give up the “other” event for theirs. That was part of his frustration. He said he didn’t care, but obviously he did, or he wouldn’t have felt the overwhelm. Anyway, one of the organizers informed him that the 2 events weren’t the same weekend at all, but on successive weekends. He was discombobulated for no good reason, but it wasn’t until he settled down with tapping, & made the appropriate phone call, that he realized he had his weekends all messed up.
Did EFT fix Brad’s calendar? Well, probably not, but it did clear him enough so he could ask the appropriate questions, completely clarifying all the issues around his overwhelm.

From Woe and Misery to Healing with Christian EFT

July is here with all its impending nostalgic glory, or pain, depending on one’s point of view. Glory because I’ve been healed of my emotional pain; Pain because I had to lose 2 of my “babies” to get here.

Tonight, as I took a walk in the cool of a beautiful Wisconsin evening, I once again slipped back into the part of me where I once lived. Oh, not entirely back, just a short distance back into that pain, or guilt, that I often identify as almost survivor’s guilt.

This has to smack a bit of what our military personnel feel like when one of them loses an entire platoon, leaving the one left behind devastated emotionally, pondering the question of “why not me?”

That question once again reared its ugly head and a few tears slid down my cheeks, as I just gently, one more time, tapped away the heart pain I feel when I again realize that I had to lose two of my younger siblings in order to find myself right here, right now, in a place I never imagined I would be, if I dreamed a 1000 years.

Never could I have thought this world I now find myself in would ever have emerged out of that muck & mire. Karen died of biliary atresia at seventeen months of age; Bill was two months old when she passed; I was age 8. My entire life up until 3 years ago was run purely on the leftovers and buried emotions around Karen’s death. One day she was alive when I left for school and by evening I was being told by family friends she was gone. Gone? Oh, I was told shortly after she was born that she was going to die, but what did that mean to a 7 year old? Absolutely nothing.

I loved that baby as my own. I bathed her, I fed her, I changed her diapers, and I even stayed up for a few hours at night with her when I saw, as a 7 year old, the complete exhaustion in my Mom’s eyes. I would send Mom back to bed and deal with fussy, sick Karen on my own. No one could put her to sleep as quickly as I could. It was my 7 year old claim to fame, one of the few things Mom ever gave me kudos for.

My total memory of Karen’s funeral consists of my aunt hauling me out of church because I was wailing so hard about “my baby being in that white box”. My aunt words to me were, “You’re making a scene”. There is a short snippet of the trip to the cemetery, a comment I made about a classmate living across the street from that cemetery. That is where the memories stop; that is the sum total of Karen’s death memories.

There are no more. Karen was never spoken of again in our household that I remember. She disappeared forever. My baby simply vanished in that small white cement box.

I slipped into depression, my first, 9 years later, in nursing school when I got to my pediatric rotation. I finally was able to ascertain exactly what Karen died from. No one at home knew. And, if they did, they certainly weren’t sharing it with me. I always felt I was in the dark. No one told me anything. No one told me Karen was close to death.

I blamed myself for not figuring that out at age 8. For pete’s sake, her crib had been moved into the living room and my Grandma Rice was there with us as much as possible. I assume she & Mom traded off sitting with Karen 24/7 for those last days, but why didn’t I figure that out & ask to stay home that morning?

Isn’t guilt an interesting emotion? I have another memory, I think, that came out during Matrix Reimprinting around Karen’s death. Perhaps that is a story for another time. I must have buried a million memories. I lived unknowingly in some numb, unloved, isolated limbo of sorts for most of my life. My heart was hardened.

I was always crabby and defensive about everything. I had literally no friends. I functioned in some manner. I grew up in church, so getting into trouble or doing anything that would disappoint my parents or the priests and nuns was completely out of the question. I instinctively knew that would simply make my emotional issues worse by increasing the isolation. The family always withdrew itself from any member that remotely stepped “out of line”.

And so life went on. I guess if you could call it living. I finished nursing school, found an interesting job or two, left PA for Kentucky, and then eventually moved to Wisconsin. Looking back now, as my adult self, it is amazing that I never delved into alcohol or drugs to salve all that pain, or a series of sexual encounters with a possible subsequent chain of unwanted babies.

Somehow, God protected me from doing any of that self-destructive behavior. The self-destruction was contained solely in my own mind of my own making. I entertained myself by playing those same old recordings over and over again until those neural pathways were thick and heavy. I knew well that song of feeling unloved, unwanted, rejected, guilty, and a litany of every emotion under the sun.

Finally, I found a man who in my Dad’s words “would put up with” me. We married, his second, my first, later in my life, but that was going downhill because Brad’s issues from childhood were as bad as or worse than mine. We fought nearly constantly. Brad ended up in an early forced retirement, meaning we were together 24/7/365. It wasn’t pretty!

The impact of Karen’s death defined everything - the rest of my childhood and it shaped my adult beliefs, about me and all those around me, and still I never learned the lessons I needed to heal. Oh, I went to counseling several times, the latest was during my second depression a couple of years before Brad & I married.

I even wrote my parents a long letter at the behest of the counselor about everything in my life, hoping that would heal parts of me. That didn’t go well either. God allowed a perfect storm of sorts to simply brew. I had never recovered emotionally from Karen’s death’s, my marriage was failing miserably, I was horribly overweight, I hated myself and my life, and all of it was beginning to take a physical toll on me.

It was taking a toll on my younger brother, Joe, too, the next in line to me who was an extremely brittle diabetic who already had colon cancer 5 or so years previously. We had no tools to help us heal. The toolbox was totally empty. We hadn’t learned a thing about coping emotionally in life. August 9, 2008 struck. I sensed it had the potential to be the worst day of my pathetic life. Now, the pain really began; however, unbeknownst to me, this time this pain would lead to real healing and real tangible change in my life. How I longed for that!

The story is too long to tell here, so I will shorten it. I see how it all played out like it was yesterday in my mind’s eye. I was sitting at my computer, much like I’m doing right now, when the phone rang. I answered it, excited, as it was Bill, my youngest of the 2 brothers, an attorney, who rarely calls because he works 14-16 hours a day, and when home, spends the time with his wife and 4 young daughters. He lives 1200 miles east of me in northeastern PA, an hour or so from Manhattan.

We exchanged pleasantries, and then he got right to the point. “What did Grandma die from”, Bill asked. I’m a R.N. I knew something was terribly wrong. “Why”, I replied, “is your blood work screwed up?” I knew I had just heard some horrible news because that intuitive part of me said so and at times it seemed to be the only thing alive inside of me. The answer near killed me on the spot.

“Yes”, he replied. My heart fell out of my chest, drove itself through the computer room floor, and splatted into a million pieces on the basement concrete. My poor broken heart, dead over the death of a sister I never recovered from, dead over the parental relationships I never had, dead because nothing I could do helped me lose weight no matter how hard I tried or what I did to accomplish it, dead because my only chance, or so I thought of happiness with Brad, was dying, too, that heart, was simply now splintered.

My heart of hearts knew he wouldn’t live through what came to be a diagnosis of ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) , the childhood leukemia that is curable about 97% in kids, but has only about a 35% cure rate in adults with all modalities of treatment, including a stem cell transplant. I found out later only 1000 cases of adult ALL are diagnosed yearly in the US. Yes, Bill snagged himself a bad one – it completely destroyed his DNA, the core of wellness in his body. His coping skills, too, didn’t help him at all either.

Were all 6 of us siblings doomed? I began to assume so. A tortured 2 years and 2 weeks began its course right then and there. That day I began a journal for Bill’s girls, knowing that if their Dad didn’t survive, they would “forget” him. The oldest was 18, scheduled to start college within weeks, and Bill’s baby was just 8 years old, the same age as I was when Karen died.

Bill had the craziest sense of humor on the planet and everyone loved him. He was the heart & soul of our dysfunctional family. He simply was a genuinely nice guy. I wanted to capture that for the girls, plus chronicle the disease process as something cathartic for me.

To this day, 400 pages later, I have yet to reopen that journal to once again read it. I have no idea when that will happen. It’s part of the journey, too. I spent about 6-7 weeks total of his illness with him in New York City/Hackensack, N.J./Lakeville, PA areas, nursing him, caring for him, and just generally repeating what I did as an 8 year old for baby sister Karen.

History was repeating itself in a horrendous way. Bill’s family lived 3 hours away from the medical center, so his wife couldn’t be with him and still care for 4 children. My Mom was well into her 7th decade of life and I didn’t think it fair for her to have to care for another probably dying child. Once through was enough for anyone.

As the R.N. in the family, this was my job to do. And so I did it. Those are the memories I cherish. Bill & I spent much time alone, reacquainting, reminiscing, Bill remembering childhood memories I had long forgotten, or buried, laughing and goofing off our way through days on end at the hospital, and me just holding him, literally, as procedures such as PICC lines were inserted, the procedures that brought home to both of us the inevitability and reality that all of this was really happening to him.

The tears begin anew as I type this. Today they break quickly and easily under my tapping fingers. Then I had no defense. I just plodded on day after day, filled with worry and fear, wondering when the final phone call would come. Somewhere in here, shortly after Bill’s stem cell transplant, a break happened with my 2 sisters. I, to this day, have absolutely no idea what I did or what happened.

The relationship, what little there was, simply splintered, too, like my heart that August, 2008, morning. It has yet to recover. As in usual fashion, no one else in the family saw Bill’s deterioration, or they simply denied it is probably a better description. I talked with him often, many times late at night when his pain was at its worst. The stem cell transplant held for a few months, and then the leukemia came roaring back with all its fury.

I made 3 long trips east during this time. Brad was wonderful to me through it all. He simply allowed me to do what I had to do. The last trip with Bill alive was 3 years ago this month. He simply refused to give up. No one wants to give up when all treatment options are gone, but I couldn’t seem to make him understand the need for hospice (and I promised him if he wanted home hospice, we would do that – I would stand with him every moment).

He simply wouldn’t sign the DNR, making the doctors continue every treatment option right until the end. Perhaps, another piece of my guilt was, I couldn’t take much more. I had little help, except for Mother, in caring for him, and she had my Dad to take care of back home, 6 hours away. Everyone else had families to care for. I’d call, asking for some relief from my sisters.

Return phone calls never came – they couldn’t deal with the illness either. I just kept going, somehow by God’s grace. The last 2 weeks of Bill’s life, and, of course, I didn’t know it was the last 2 weeks; I finally just went home to Wisconsin. I needed some peace. He was bad & I knew it.

Mom came to stay with him in a motel in N.J., as he was still getting a specialized radiation for an ALL brain tumor that had popped up a couple months previously, causing him excruciating pain because it was sitting right on his trigeminal nerve, mimicking tic douloureux . I had finally within the previous week convinced him to see a pain specialist.

That doctor was wonderful. Bill’s dose of oral Dilaudid was unbelievable. I’d never seen the like of it in my 35 years of nursing practice. I was permitted to allow him to take up to 32 mg of the stuff every 1-2 hours. That dose would have killed most of us. If I needed more, I was to simply call, and that phone, believe it or not, was answered immediately by pain clinic staff. He could have whatever dose he needed.

When I picked up the prescription from the pharmacy, we realized (remember Bill was an attorney, so he knew these things!) I had something like $32,000 street value of Dilaudid in my pocket! I made him hide the bottle in the house so no one would be tempted! I gave Mom her instructions and returned to Wisconsin, telling Bill good-bye for what I now know to be the last time I saw him alive.

Within 3 days, the crisis came. Mom had to deal with him. She phoned me & I made phone calls for her to get her the help she needed to make decisions for him. Bill was re-admitted to Hackensack University Medical Center where he stayed until 36 hours before he died when he was moved to a hospice facility 3 hours west in Scranton, PA.

I was no longer there with him. No one could make any decisions, as I could well understand. I, to this day, have no idea who finally put him in hospice where he should have been all along. I had done what I could for him and maybe I should have stayed those weeks instead of Mom, but the family needed a reality check. No one understood that Bill was dying, or they were denying the fact. They had to get the point.

As always, I got the dirty work of telling people he was dying. First, I told brother Joe who promptly said good-bye and hung up the phone and the following day Mom asked what I thought. I gently told her she was going to lose another child. Her tears started, she sniffed them back, bucked it up stoically, and replied, “I thought so. How long do you think he has?” I had no idea it was only about 5 weeks. Brad & I put 2500 miles on the car to bury Bill because of wakes/funerals on both ends of PA.

His professional one with all the lawyers and judges was in eastern PA and the family one with his burial in western PA. Mom essentially threw Brad & me out of her house 3 days after Bill’s burial. She to this day has no idea what she said to me. I would never confront her on it. It hurt, but it was the grief talking, I now know. I let it alone. I haven’t been back. I’m not quite ready for that just yet. I knew I had to grieve. I always told patients’ families – you grieve now or you grieve later, and later is usually worse. I took my own advice.

Let me just say, amidst that grief I learned about EFT. I downloaded the EFTU mini-manual, devoured it, tried it, got a couple one minute miracles and I was hooked! I knew it was my last chance at healing, or I was next to follow Bill to the grave. I lived with 6 months of the world’s worse chest pain, which amazingly vanished on December 18th, knowing it was an emotional issue.

No doctor was going to fix the pain. My heart was simply broken. Other people died of less issues than this. I took Dawson’s Minneapolis EFTU classes Levels 1 & 2 the following April, and the rest is history. I quickly did my EFT-INT certification, and began working on my EFT-EXP certification soon thereafter, tapping with anyone I could find, and all the while tapping furiously on my own stuff, never realizing how much there really was that needed to move.

I solicited Irene Baum, EFT-INT, in Milwaukee to help me. I have no idea how I would have done it without her! I sit here today a candidate trainer for EFTUniverse, amazed and emotionally healthy. And I mean emotionally healthy, complete, peaceful, the chatter of my previous life gone from my subconscious, free at last, our marriage mostly healed (we’re married, remember, we still have “words” some days!), thanks to Kim Eisen, EFT-INT, in Minneapolis who tapped with Brad, discharging his hate for his abusive, now dead parents.

I never really dealt with Karen’s death. It simply led from one thing to another. That early cognitive learning just compounded itself event upon event until I lived in an overwhelmed state of emotional turmoil. I have with tapping pulled out 2 early 18 month old events/memories that I know shaped everything from that moment on. They were awful memories. It was no wonder I could barely function in life.

Without sounding non-empathic, I want to encourage anyone reading this that no matter what your issues, no matter how long you have endured them, no matter how painful, no matter anything, persevere through them. I’m here to tell you that you can heal. EFT will work. Do not give up hope; just keep tapping every minute you have to spare. TAP! And find a certified EFT practitioner from the list on this website to help you, if you feel stuck or you feel you cannot go on. Call someone. Reach out. Save your life. If I can do it with childhood PTSD abuse stemming from at least 18 months of age on, so can you!

Today, I stand here, with a tiny bit of sadness remaining, knowing I’m so very alive and Bill & Karen are so very dead. But the realization dawned on me, causing some tears, that I cared for them all of their lives, at least Karen’s short 17 months of life, and Bill at the beginning, as he was 9 years younger than I, and again at the end when he needed someone to care for his every need.

I have no regrets at all of the time I gave both of them. It was my pleasure to do it. The sad pain comes knowing that in their deaths they returned the favor and cared for me. It was their deaths that was instrumental in my healing, my rebirth of sorts, by the grace of God, through EFT. My new life now begins, as I open this chapter in continuing to serve mankind, as God so deems, through the healing mechanism of Emotional Freedom Techniques.

I have to make them proud and allow them to see that their early deaths were not in vain. It all served a much higher purpose than any of us could have ever imagined. I stand amazed! God be praised. Amen.
